The other day I came across an obi that was literally like a breath of fresh air. While the front is black silk with a colourful dyed pattern, the lining is a coarse summer weave called ‘Ro’ that allows the breeze to pass right through. You can see the patterns right through to the reverse side making for a refreshing cool look! I’ve made it into a table runner with matching black tassels that can be reversed for a cool feel.

Thank you everyone for your patronage since we launched last year! It has been great to meet so many from so many countries! Now the day has arrived when I can welcome you to our newly renewed BARRIQUE TOKYO online shop.
We still offer the lines of interior decoration and accessories handmade from vintage silk kimonos, but now we also offer Made to Order items! You may have seen the announcements on Facebook or Instagram .
The situation since last year has made it difficult for overseas customers who like Japan to visit us here, and it is likely to continue that way for a while. So, we wanted to make it even easier for them to experience Japan and the traditions of Japanese style and craftsmanship at home in their own countries. To meet each customers’ requests, we will remake the antique kimonos and silk obi-sashes that I carefully select from around Japan into interior decoration sets, according to each customers’ selection.
The photos posted on the site were taken at Stephen’s lovely house on the Izu Penninsula, and feature items remade from kimonos and obis to match the traditional Japanese style of the house. Of course, these and other crafted products available on the site provide an authentic Japanese accent to houses around the world!
Please browse our renewed online shop.

Christmas is just around the corner; we are likely to spend a different Christmas and New Year holidays this year.
As a professional stylist, I occasionally have opportunities to do Japanese kimono styling for photo and commercial shootings; and did one last week.
For this occasion, I have selected a beautiful Okinawa's tradicional kimono called Benigata Kimono with a choice of Okinawa's traditional Bingata Obi designed by Nawacho-san, a texitle designer of Japanese towels sold at our shop.
This light-blue kimono perfectly matches with the Obi with unique coloring and texitled. The pattern of the Obi is a plant called shell ginger, which many Okinawans love and use it for aromatic products such as tea and lotions.
We shall be able to introduce more of Nawacho-san's products at our shop starting next year. We will keep you posted.
May your rest of 2020 be happy and healthy; looking forward to seeing you at our shop in 2021 as well.
Best Wishes!

]]>Today, I'd like to introduce a pair items of ours, a set of pillow covers, made from Nagoya Obi-belt that originally belonged to a grandmonther of a friend of mine. The Obi is more than 90 years ago and one of the kind item, so we had a good discussion how we try to rebirth this Obi.
After some discussion with my friend, I decided to make smaller pillow covers. What I did first was untied the thread from the Obi and made a cloth out of it. Then gently hand-washed and ironed it. BTW, the Obi is 100% fine silk so it did take a courage to wash and iron as you can imagine... Then, think about the best pattern and took another courage to cut the Obi into the pillow cover square shape me imaginating the best pattern of the Obi is shown beatifully on the front of the pillows. Lots of courage and effort. Hope you like them as we do.
They are now available at our shop. Enjoy shopping with us at BARRIQUE TOKYO! Chieko, Shop Curator & Producer
]]>As it may happen to the others, my chances of hand-writing has decreased tremendously these days.
In order to brush up my hand-writing skills, I started to taking lesions on what we call Pen-calligraphy, mini-version of Shodo calligraphy, starting last month.
Different from using regular pens and pencils, this is literally more closer to Japanese Shodo calligraphy using smaller special pens.
I haven't done this since I was a little girl, some decades ago, but it's been really an enjoyable time for me. I shall send you personally a hand-written greeting card once my skills are improved!
Chieko, Barrique Tokyo Shop Curator & Producer PS beautiful hand-writing in the photo is done by my teacher, FYI...

BARRIQUE TOKYO and its team believe the Shippo patterned logo brings us a spirit of "MOTTAINAI", or 'too shame to waste it'; the spirit of us to continue seeking and encountering 'new' traditional Kimono and Obi belts throughout Japan.

I grew up with authentic Japan tradition such as Kimonos and Obi belts at home since I was a child. We don't have many chances to wear them these days unfortunately, but I feel they can be reborn by using them and make home furnishing and decoration items. They are all my babies. I hope you like them.
Enjoy shopping with BARRIQUE TOKYO!
